Where it came from
Vona, Butcher of Magan was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan set for Magic: The Gathering. This specific card, numbered 231s, is a premium promotional version distributed through Wizards of the Coast's organized play programs. The character represents a high-ranking vampire of the Legion of Dusk, a faction inspired by Spanish conquistadors and gothic horror tropes, reflecting the set's central theme of exploration and tribal conflict on a Mesoamerican-inspired plane.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who depicted Vona with a regal, imposing aesthetic consistent with the vampire aristocracy of the Ixalan setting. The design focused on translating the lore-heavy narrative of the Legion of Dusk—characterized by their rigid hierarchy and blood-rituals—into a functional card with powerful life-draining abilities. It was well-received by the player base for its thematic resonance and its role as a premier legendary creature in Commander and Standard formats during its release window.
