Where it came from
Vona, Butcher of Magan was released in 2017 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ixalan. The card represents a central antagonist within the set's narrative, portraying a high-ranking vampire of the Legion of Dusk who seeks the Immortal Sun to end her people's curse of eternal thirst. This thematic focus on the conquistador-inspired vampire faction reflects the expansion's exploration of colonial and mythological conflicts on the plane of Ixalan.
The card was illustrated by Daarken, a prolific fantasy artist known for his dark and atmospheric depictions of gothic figures. The design aims to capture Vona's authoritative and predatory nature through her imposing stance and opulent, yet blood-stained, regalia. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile inclusion in Commander and niche tribal decks due to its ability to remove nonland permanents at the cost of life, grounding its mechanical function in the vampiric theme of sacrifice.
