Where it came from
Vow of Duty was first released in the 2012 Commander expansion, designed by Wizards of the Coast to support multiplayer-focused gameplay. The card belongs to a cycle of 'Vows' that grant the enchanted creature a power boost while imposing a restriction: the creature cannot attack the controller of the aura, fostering political maneuvering and defensive play within the social dynamics of the Commander format.
The version from Game Night: Free-for-All, marked as collector number 21, was included in a 2022 boxed set specifically curated for casual, out-of-the-box multiplayer sessions. The illustration, originally credited to Kev Walker, features a solemn, oath-bound sentinel, reflecting the card's mechanical intent of enforcing loyalty through magical restraint. The art style is consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic established for the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, emphasizing thematic cohesion across the game's various supplemental products.
