Where it came from
Vow of Duty was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featured in the Silverquill Statement preconstructed deck. This card belongs to a cycle of 'Vow' auras that provide a stat bonus to a creature while simultaneously imposing a restriction that prevents that creature from attacking the player who controls the aura. It was designed as a tool for multiplayer formats to manipulate the battlefield dynamics by protecting the controller while incentivizing opponents to attack elsewhere.
The artwork for this card was commissioned from artist Campbell White, who utilized a bold, high-contrast aesthetic consistent with the Silverquill college's identity on the plane of Strixhaven. The design intent focuses on political utility, offering a defensive layer that serves as a deterrent rather than a direct removal spell. Upon its release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its efficiency in budget-conscious defensive strategies and its ability to act as a soft political peacekeeper during matches.
