Vow of Flight

Vow of Flight was released in 2011 as part of the inaugural Commander product line, a series of preconstructed decks designed specifically for the popular multiplayer format. Wizards of the Coast introduced these decks to provide players with a curated, accessible entry point into Commander, which had previously relied entirely on custom-built decks. The Vow cycle of auras was created to function as both a political tool and a defensive measure, allowing players to buff a creature while preventing it from attacking the owner.

The card features illustration by Kev Walker, a longtime contributor to the game known for his distinct, gritty fantasy style. Walker was tasked with conveying the essence of a binding enchantment, utilizing visual cues of ethereal chains and restrictive magic to match the card's mechanical function. Upon its release, the cycle was well-received by the community for adding a layer of social strategy to board states, becoming a staple inclusion for blue-aligned decks that prioritize diplomatic maneuvering over pure aggression.
