Where it came from
Vow of Flight was released in November 2020 as part of the Commander Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Commander format, featuring a draftable experience that introduced many cards tailored to multiplayer interactions. As an aura enchantment, it fits into the 'Vow' cycle, a series of cards intended to bolster a creature while preventing it from attacking the controller, thereby managing threats in a political four-player environment.
The card was illustrated by the artist Lake Hurwitz, who rendered the subject with a ethereal, flowing aesthetic that evokes themes of aerial superiority and divine protection. The design intent was to provide blue-aligned decks with a utility tool that could either buff a friendly creature or neutralize an opponent’s threat by restricting its combat targets. Upon release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its versatility and its ability to subtly shift the momentum of a game without being overly aggressive.
