Where it came from
Walk the Plank was originally printed as a common card in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion Ixalan. The set was designed to explore a Mesoamerican-inspired plane filled with pirates, dinosaurs, and conquistadors, and this card was created to provide a flavorful, on-theme removal spell that captured the swashbuckling aesthetic of the pirate factions inhabiting the plane's high seas.
The card features artwork by illustrator Volkan Baga, who utilized a dramatic, low-angle perspective to emphasize the peril of the subject matter. By focusing on the visceral threat of execution common to maritime folklore, Baga effectively translated the card's mechanical function—destroying a creature—into a clear visual narrative that resonated with players looking for thematic depth in the Ixalan block.
