Where it came from
Walk the Plank was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a thematic removal spell, perfectly capturing the high-seas, piratical aesthetic that defined the Ixalan set, which drew heavy inspiration from Mesoamerican mythology and the Age of Discovery. Its release marked a significant moment in the game's shift toward stronger tribal synergies, specifically highlighting the Pirate creature type.
The artwork for this specific promo version was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who is known for his atmospheric and dynamic contributions to the game. By depicting a classic seafaring execution, Kieryluk aimed to ground the mechanics of the card in a visceral narrative moment. The promo version was distributed primarily through local game stores as part of participation events, becoming a sought-after piece for players who valued both the card's competitive utility and its cohesive visual storytelling.
