Where it came from
Wall of Blood was originally released in the Mirrodin expansion in 2003, designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was conceived as a black creature card featuring a unique activated ability that allows a player to pay any amount of life to increase the creature's power and toughness, reflecting the high-risk, high-reward nature of black-aligned deck archetypes.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Darrell Riche, who leaned into the dark, visceral aesthetic of the Mirrodin plane, which was characterized by a metallic, artificial ecosystem. While the card became a modest staple in casual formats for its explosive potential, it was eventually included in 'The List', a rotating selection of past cards that can appear in modern-day Set Boosters, introducing it to a new generation of players.
