Where it came from
Wall of Granite was released in 1997 as part of the Portal set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed specifically as a standalone entry point for new players, the Portal set simplified the complex rules of the base game to encourage broader adoption. The card, featuring art by Jeff A. Menges, reflects the straightforward, functional aesthetic of the era, focusing on iconic fantasy tropes to orient players to the game's mechanics.
The design of Wall of Granite emphasizes the defensive nature of the 'Wall' creature type, a common archetype in early Magic sets used to stall opposing attacks. Jeff A. Menges, a prolific illustrator for the early game, rendered the creature with a grounded, illustrative style that was characteristic of the nineties fantasy art scene. It was received as a reliable, utilitarian card for beginners, serving as a staple example of how wall-based cards functioned within the game's simplified ruleset.
