Where it came from
Winds of Change was released in 1997 as part of the Portal expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was specifically designed to be an entry-level product, featuring simplified rules and streamlined gameplay mechanics intended to help newcomers transition into the more complex standard game. It holds a distinct place in the game's history as a dedicated 'starter' set that removed the timing complexity of the traditional instant-speed spell system.
The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prominent artist whose work defined the early aesthetic of Magic: The Gathering. Hoover’s design for Winds of Change utilizes his signature fluid, vibrant style to depict the chaotic, gusting energy of the spell. While the card is a relatively simple effect that forces players to shuffle their hands and redraw, it remains a favorite among long-time collectors for its evocative artwork and its role as a representative piece of the 1990s era of card design.
