Provenance

Where it came from

Wall of Ice was released in 1994 as part of the Summer Magic set, known internally as Edgar. This set was produced as a corrective print run to address numerous errors and omissions found in the earlier Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering. Despite being intended for general distribution, most of the print run was destroyed due to a series of compounding production mistakes, making the cards that survived among the most elusive and sought-after rarities in the game's history.

The card features artwork by Richard Thomas, one of the original illustrators for Magic: The Gathering. Thomas employed a stylized, minimalist approach that became a signature of the game's early aesthetic. The illustration depicts a jagged, looming ice barrier, designed to visually communicate the card’s function as a high-toughness defensive creature. The art was well-received for its atmospheric contribution to the game’s early visual identity, which favored dark fantasy themes over more modern, polished digital styles.
