Where it came from
The 'War of the Last Alliance' card, designated as 36s within the 'Tales of Middle-earth' promotional set for Magic: The Gathering, was released in 2023 as part of a landmark collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Middle-earth Enterprises. This specific promotional variant features unique art and treatment designed to evoke the epic scale of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, focusing on the historical battle where Elves and Men united against Sauron.
The card was crafted to serve as both a functional game piece and a collectible tribute to the rich visual history of Middle-earth. It follows in the tradition of MTG's 'Universes Beyond' series, which seeks to integrate iconic fantasy properties into the game's mechanics. The art direction emphasized a cinematic composition intended to resonate with both long-time tabletop players and fans of Tolkien’s literary and film adaptations.
