Where it came from
Warp Artifact was released in 1994 as part of the Summer Magic set, known colloquially among players as Edgar. This set was a reproduction of the core Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering, intended to correct printing errors and color saturation issues found in earlier releases. Despite these improvements, the set was plagued by its own production mistakes and saw a very limited distribution, making it a distinct curiosity within the early history of the game.
The card features artwork by Amy Weber, one of the original illustrators for the game's debut set. Her design for Warp Artifact emphasizes the surreal, cosmic aesthetic characteristic of early Magic, utilizing a stark, abstract style to convey the chaotic nature of the card's effect. Within the broader context of the set, the card represents the experimental design philosophy of the mid-1990s, where mechanics often focused on unpredictable board state interactions.
