Serra Angel

The Serra Angel card from the 1994 Summer Magic set, often referred to by collectors as the Edgar set, holds a unique place in the history of Magic: The Gathering. Produced as a corrected print run to address the significant color and text errors found in the Revised Edition, this set was largely intended for distribution to hobby shops and distributors. However, due to a warehouse fire and internal mismanagement at Wizards of the Coast, almost the entire print run was destroyed, leaving only a small, undocumented quantity to circulate into the secondary market.

The artwork for the Serra Angel was created by Douglas Shuler, whose original illustration remains one of the most iconic images in the game’s early history. His design emphasized a sense of serene, holy power that defined the white mana color identity for years to come. Because of the extreme rarity of the Summer Magic printing, the card is visually distinct for its cleaner color saturation and improved contrast compared to the previous Revised iteration, marking it as a highly sought-after curiosity for serious historians of the game.
