Where it came from
Warrior's Oath was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was specifically designed to introduce the game to the Asian market by centering its themes and imagery on the 14th-century Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This card, a red sorcery, utilizes the set's unique mechanics to allow a player to take an extra turn in exchange for losing the game at the end of that turn, a high-risk gamble that captures the desperate tactical nature of the source material.
The art and design of the set were heavily influenced by traditional East Asian artistic sensibilities, moving away from the typical Western fantasy tropes of the base game. While the set was initially limited in its distribution, it has since become highly sought after by collectors for its historical flavor and mechanically distinct cards. Warrior's Oath is recognized for its evocative illustration and the strategic weight it brings to gameplay, standing as a representative piece of a unique chapter in the game's broader history.
