Wastes

Wastes, an unusual colorless basic land, first appeared in the 2016 expansion Oath of the Gatewatch to support the Eldrazi theme. This specific Secret Lair iteration, numbered 795, was released as part of a curated drop that reimagined the landscape of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. It follows the functional design of its predecessor, serving as a source of colorless mana for decks that require it, while distancing itself from the traditional color pie constraints of the game.

The visual design of this card leans into a minimalist, high-concept aesthetic common to the Secret Lair series, intended to offer long-term players a distinct alternative to standard card art. By stripping away the utilitarian framing of typical basic lands, the artist focuses on conveying the desolate, alien nature of the Eldrazi-affected wastes. Upon its release, it was received primarily as a premium collector's piece, prized by players who prioritize unified deck aesthetics and the unique, frame-breaking styling typical of limited-run promotional sets.
