Provenance

Where it came from

Wastes was introduced in the 2016 set Oath of the Gatewatch as the first colorless basic land in Magic: The Gathering history. Its creation was necessitated by the set's central antagonist, the Eldrazi, who required a specific mana source to fuel their devoid abilities. By introducing a basic land that produces colorless mana, Wizards of the Coast provided a functional and thematic anchor for decks focused on these otherworldly creatures.

The card's stark, minimalist aesthetic was designed to evoke the corruption and desolation left in the wake of the Eldrazi. Illustrators often leaned into high-contrast landscapes, utilizing shades of gray, white, and obsidian to depict a reality stripped of color. The design was well-received by the player base, as it solved a long-standing mechanical hurdle in colorless deckbuilding while solidifying the visual identity of the Eldrazi invasion.
