Provenance

Where it came from

The Wastes card debuted in the Magic: The Gathering 'Oath of the Gatewatch' expansion, released in early 2016. It represents a colorless basic land, a landmark design choice that introduced a new form of mana requirement denoted by the diamond-shaped symbol. This was a departure from the traditional five-color mana system, intended to represent the corrupting, otherworldly influence of the Eldrazi titans as they encroached upon the plane of Zendikar.

The art was commissioned from veteran fantasy illustrator Jason Felix. His design for the card focuses on a desolate, alien landscape characterized by twisted geometric structures and a stark, desaturated color palette. By eschewing the lush, vibrant environments typical of basic land art, Felix captured the sense of existential dread and environmental decay essential to the set’s narrative arc. The card was well-received by players for its mechanical innovation and its ability to ground the Eldrazi theme in a tangible game resource.
