Where it came from
The 'We Hope You Like Squirrels' card was released as part of the 'Secret Lair Showcase: Zendikar Revisited' drop, a specialized collection issued by Wizards of the Coast for their Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Released in 2020, this drop featured cards that utilized the distinctive 'showcase' art style associated with the Zendikar Rising expansion, intended to provide players with highly stylized, visually experimental versions of popular cards.
The card features artwork by illustrator Lindsey Look, who leaned into a whimsical and thematic aesthetic to highlight the game's long-standing affinity for squirrel-themed mechanics. Upon its release, the card was received as a humorous and meta-commentary addition to the game's expansive catalog, appealing particularly to players who appreciate the lighter, more playful side of the franchise's creative output.
