Where it came from
Released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms expansion, the Wei Infantry card reflects a unique period in Magic: The Gathering history. Designed specifically for the Asian market, the set was inspired by the 14th-century Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. This localized approach allowed Wizards of the Coast to introduce the game to new territories by utilizing a narrative framework familiar and culturally significant to players in those regions.
The art and mechanical design for the set were tailored to emphasize the tactical themes of historical Chinese warfare. While the Portal series was initially intended to simplify gameplay for beginners through streamlined mechanics and simplified rule sets, the Three Kingdoms expansion is now highly regarded by collectors for its distinct flavor and its departure from the traditional fantasy tropes seen in the core sets of the era. The Wei Infantry, representing the soldiers of the Wei state, stands as a hallmark of this narrative-heavy design philosophy.
