Where it came from
Zhou Yu, Chief Commander was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms set. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, this set was designed specifically for the Asian market to introduce players to the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering through the lens of the historical Chinese epic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The set utilized a simplified rules engine intended to be more accessible than the standard game, yet it remains a unique chapter in the game's history due to its limited distribution.
The card artwork was created by veteran illustrator Jerry Tiritilli. His depiction of the legendary strategist captures a stoic, commanding presence fitting for the character's status as a central figure in the Battle of Red Cliffs. Upon its release, the card gained significant interest from players for its powerful gameplay ability, which allows a player to draw cards equal to the number of creatures their opponent controls, making it a staple of the set's legacy.
