Where it came from
Wellspring was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a colorless artifact, it reflects the set's thematic focus on the desert world of Rabiah, which was inspired by the tales of the Arabian Nights. Mirage is historically significant for being the first set designed as a standalone draft environment, marking a shift in how Wizards of the Coast approached set development and gameplay synergy.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Anson Maddocks, who was one of the original illustrators for the game. His design utilizes the distinct, hand-painted aesthetic common to early Magic sets, emphasizing a mystical, flowing water source that contrasts with the arid landscape depicted in much of the Mirage collection. While the card is often viewed as a utility piece rather than a competitive staple, it remains a recognized example of the game's mid-nineties art style.
