What it does

Target artifact, creature, or land phases out. (While it's phased out, it's treated as though it doesn't exist. It phases in before its controller untaps during their next untap step.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Reality Ripple was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Mirage marked a significant shift in the game's design philosophy, as it was the first set specifically balanced and playtested for the 'Limited' format, where players build decks using only a small pool of cards opened from booster packs. The card was designed to interact with the game's phased mechanics, a complex state of existence where permanents are treated as though they do not exist while remaining on the battlefield.

The artwork for the card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prominent artist in the early years of the game known for his distinct, expressive style. In his depiction of the Reality Ripple, Hoover leaned into the ethereal and unstable nature of the effect, using swirling, dreamlike patterns to illustrate the temporal displacement caused by the spell. The card was well-regarded among players for its tactical versatility in utility-focused decks and remains a representative example of the imaginative aesthetic that defined the Mirage set.
