Forbidden Crypt

Forbidden Crypt was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was notable for being the first to be designed as a self-contained environment, moving away from the scattered themes of earlier releases to focus on a cohesive, African-inspired aesthetic and mechanical synergy. The card was designed as a rare enchantment, intended to offer players a high-risk, high-reward strategy by allowing them to play cards directly from their graveyard at the cost of losing life.

The artwork was provided by D. Alexander Gregory, whose contributions to the era are recognized for their dark, atmospheric quality. Gregory’s illustration for the card depicts an eerie, subterranean burial site, effectively capturing the macabre essence of the game's black mana cards. While the card is often cited by collectors for its niche mechanical application and unique art style, it remains a quintessential example of the experimental design philosophy that characterized the mid-nineties period of the game.
