What it does

Each player secretly chooses a number 0 or greater, then all players reveal those numbers simultaneously and determine the highest and lowest numbers revealed this way. Wheel of Misfortune deals damage equal to the highest number to each player who chose that number. Each player who didn't choose the lowest number discards their hand, then draws seven cards.

Provenance

Where it came from

Wheel of Misfortune was released as part of the Secret Lair series, specifically within the 'Party Hard, Shred Harder' drop offered by Wizards of the Coast in 2020. This card is a functional variant of an existing Magic: The Gathering spell, repurposed with an aggressive, heavy-metal aesthetic that leans into themes of chaos and risk. The set was designed to break from the traditional high-fantasy art style of the game, appealing to collectors who prefer a grittier, contemporary visual identity.

The artwork for this particular iteration was created by the artist God Machine, known for a distinct style characterized by bold lines and intense, subversive imagery. The illustration depicts a stylized, infernal roulette-style contraption that reflects the card's gameplay mechanic of forcing players to choose a number and risk taking damage. Upon its release, it was well-received by players seeking unique art treatments that diverge from the standard core set visual language.
