Where it came from
When Fluffy Bunnies Attack was released in 2004 as part of the Unhinged expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was the second of the 'un-sets,' a series of standalone, non-tournament-legal expansions designed to explore comedic mechanics, meta-humor, and card designs that would be impossible within the constraints of standard play. The set was released during a period when Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with how far they could push the boundaries of their card game mechanics while maintaining an engaging experience.
The card features artwork by Ron Spencer, a prominent illustrator known for his distinctively gritty and often visceral style within the Magic: The Gathering universe. By pairing Spencer's intense, dramatic artistic sensibilities with the whimsical and absurd concept of aggressive rabbits, the design creates a jarring visual juxtaposition that characterizes the spirit of the Unhinged set. It remains a notable example of the creative freedom afforded to artists when the traditional thematic restrictions of the game are lifted.
