Where it came from
Whir of Invention was released in 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Kaladesh, an industrial world powered by a magical substance called Aether, the card was designed to support the set's central 'Improvise' mechanic. This keyword allowed players to tap their non-creature artifacts to reduce the cost of spells, effectively turning an inventor's tools into a fuel source for their creations.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who depicted a clockwork engineer mid-assembly, emphasizing the frantic energy of the invention process. Mechanically, the card is a tutor effect, allowing players to search their library for artifact cards and place them directly onto the battlefield. It quickly found a home in competitive formats like Modern and Commander, where players prized its versatility and efficiency in assembling complex engine pieces.
