Where it came from
Whir of Invention was first introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Aether Revolt, designed as a powerful utility spell centered on the set's signature 'improvise' mechanic. This promo variant, bearing the collector number 49s, was distributed through the Wizards of the Coast promo program to celebrate the set's release, often as a reward for participation in Friday Night Magic or similar organized play events.
The card features artwork by Lake Hurwitz, who was tasked with depicting the chaotic yet precise energy of Kaladesh's artifice-driven society. Hurwitz focused on the visual representation of magical energy manifesting through intricate machinery, aiming to convey the sense of sudden, gear-driven creation. Within the competitive community, the card became a staple in eternal formats for its ability to tutor specific artifacts directly onto the battlefield, cementing its status as both a functional tool for deck builders and a sought-after aesthetic piece for collectors.
