Where it came from
Widget Contraption was released in December 2017 as part of Unstable, the third 'un-set' expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These sets are designed by Wizards of the Coast as silver-bordered, non-tournament-legal collections that prioritize humor, mechanical experimentation, and unconventional play experiences over standard competitive balance.
The card was illustrated by artist Matt Cavotta, who frequently worked on the game during the early 2000s. The design leans into the whimsical, steampunk-inspired aesthetic characteristic of the Unstable set, aiming to evoke the feel of a chaotic, jury-rigged invention. It was generally well-received by the player base for its nostalgic visual style and its functional role as a versatile utility card within the set's unique drafting environment.
