Where it came from
The Island card from the Unstable set, released by Wizards of the Coast in December 2017, represents a departure from traditional Magic: The Gathering aesthetics. Designed as a full-art basic land, it was part of an 'un-set'—a series intended for casual play that prioritizes humor, experimental mechanics, and radical visual shifts over strict tournament legality.
The art was created by John Avon, a long-time contributor to the game known for his sweeping, ethereal landscapes. For this specific printing, Avon leaned into a clean, minimalist style that emphasizes the absence of traditional text boxes, allowing the intricate, dreamlike depiction of the island’s horizon to occupy the entire face of the card. Upon release, the design was widely praised by the player base for its sophisticated, panoramic look, quickly becoming a sought-after staple for players looking to elevate the visual presentation of their decks.
