Where it came from
Will of the Mardu was released as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander set, drawing from the deep lore of the plane of Tarkir. This plane is defined by the shifting timeline of the Khans and the draconic dominance that followed, with the Mardu Horde representing the aggressive, red-black-white ideology of the original timeline. The card design leans into the thematic identity of the Mardu, focusing on combat-oriented mechanics and the horde's emphasis on speed and raiding.
The art and mechanical direction of the card were intended to capture the volatile spirit of the Mardu warlords. Wizards of the Coast design teams typically utilize this series to provide players with accessible, themed support for Commander decks, focusing on recognizable mechanics from the Khans of Tarkir block. Upon its release, it was received as a functional tool for tribal-focused strategies, celebrated primarily for its synergy within the specific color identity of the Mardu clan.
