Where it came from
Will of the Sultai was introduced as part of the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Commander product line, a supplementary set designed to expand upon the lore and mechanics of the Tarkir plane within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. The card is tied to the Sultai Brood, one of the five distinct factions of Tarkir, which draws inspiration from Southeast Asian aesthetics and emphasizes the intersection of death, decay, and political maneuvering through the utilization of the graveyard as a resource.
The design of the card reflects the Sultai philosophy of exploiting past resources to secure future advantage. Illustrators contributing to the Tarkir sets often focused on high-fantasy motifs blended with the unique draconic and jungle-based imagery defining this faction. The card serves as a representative example of the 'Commander' design philosophy, which prioritizes interactive, multiplayer-focused gameplay and flavor-rich mechanics that reinforce the identity of the Sultai color identity.
