Where it came from
The Wind Drake was released in 1997 as part of the Portal: Three Kingdoms set, which was designed specifically to introduce the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering to a broader, newer audience. This set was notable for its simplified ruleset and its aesthetic, which drew heavily from the historical and literary traditions of 14th-century China, specifically the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Qu Qing Qiao, who was commissioned to capture the mythological spirit of the setting. The design focused on a clean, functional layout meant to be accessible to players who found the standard game complexity daunting. While the set initially faced mixed reception due to its limited distribution and distinct mechanical departure from the core game, it has since become a cherished piece of gaming history among collectors for its unique thematic departure from high fantasy tropes.
