Windcaller Aven

Windcaller Aven was originally printed in the Modern Horizons set in 2019, a Magic: The Gathering expansion designed specifically for the Modern format. The set was conceived as a way to introduce new cards directly into the format without them passing through Standard, allowing for more complex mechanics and themes that cater to veteran players. As a common creature, it serves as an efficient tool for limited environments, emphasizing the 'cycling' mechanic that allows for card selection and graveyard synergy.

The card features artwork by Wisnu Tan, who captured the avian aesthetic typical of the Aven race within the game's lore. The design leans into the thematic identity of blue-aligned bird-folk, balancing its power and toughness with a functional ability that supports aggressive air-based strategies. Like many cards from the set, it was later added to 'The List,' a curated collection of reprints included in Set Boosters to offer players an opportunity to pull past favorites from various eras of the game's history.
