Provenance

Where it came from

Windrider Eel was originally printed in the Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2010, designed as a common creature that rewarded players for playing lands. It was later reprinted in the 2017 Archenemy: Nicol Bolas set, which shifted the card into a supplemental product designed for a specific multiplayer format. This set focused on the narrative conflict between the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas and the Gatewatch, with the inclusion of older cards like the Eel serving to balance the power levels of the preconstructed decks used in the Archenemy variant.

The art for the card was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. His depiction of the creature captures the fluid, elemental nature of the Eel as it navigates the terrain of the Zendikar plane. The card design itself reflects the broader game mechanics of the Zendikar block, which emphasized land-based synergies and environmental interaction to create a distinct feel for players during that period of the game's history.
