Where it came from
Windrider Eel was released in 2009 as part of the Zendikar expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed around an adventure-themed aesthetic, emphasizing exploration and the interaction between land cards and permanents on the battlefield. This creature features the landfall ability, a signature mechanic of the set that triggers whenever a land enters the battlefield under the player's control, reflecting the chaotic and unstable nature of the Zendikar plane.
The card was illustrated by artist Franz Vohwinkel, who utilized a vivid blue color palette to emphasize the creature's aquatic and aerial nature as it navigates the floating landscape of the setting. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid utility piece within the limited draft environment of the Zendikar block, praised for its ability to grow in power through standard play patterns that rewarded players for prioritizing land cards.
