Where it came from
Windrider Wizard was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set marked a return to the plane of Zendikar, a world defined by its volatile landscapes and adventurous exploration theme. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the 'Wizard' creature type synergy common within the blue color identity, specifically rewarding players for casting non-creature spells.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Titus Lunter, who captured the character hovering amidst the floating debris characteristic of the Zendikar environment. Lunter’s design aimed to emphasize the fluidity and magical aptitude of the figure, integrating the aesthetic of Zendikar’s unique hedrons into the background to provide a cohesive visual identity within the broader set narrative.
