Winds of Change

Winds of Change was released in 1994 as part of the Legends expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in the game's history as it was the first to be designed primarily by a community group rather than the internal Wizards of the Coast team, having been curated by Robin Herbert and Anthony Valterra. The set was created to introduce a new layer of flavor and mechanics to the expanding game, aiming to flesh out the lore of the Multiverse through distinctive, high-fantasy card designs.

The card illustration was provided by artist Quinton Hoover, a foundational figure in early Magic art known for his expressive, flowing, and ethereal style. Winds of Change was designed as a red sorcery intended to disrupt player hands by forcing a discard and redraw, embodying the chaotic nature of the color red in the game's color pie. While the card is often cited for its aggressive impact on tempo, it is also frequently admired for Hoover's signature aesthetic, which helped define the visual identity of the game during its inaugural years.
