Where it came from
Windshaper Planetar was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. This set was designed specifically for the Commander format, integrating the lore and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting into the Magic: The Gathering card game. As a rare creature card, it was crafted to serve as a defensive utility piece, utilizing the goad mechanic to manipulate the battlefield flow in multiplayer games.
The card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer, who is known for her work on numerous Magic: The Gathering sets. In designing the Planetar, the creative team aimed to capture the celestial, protective nature of this iconic Dungeons & Dragons creature. Upon release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for white-aligned decks focusing on combat control, praised for its ability to protect the player while incentivizing opponents to interact with one another.
