Where it came from
Windshaper Planetar was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. This set was designed to merge the strategic depth of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game with the iconic lore and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms campaign setting. The card specifically draws on the concept of planetars, which are powerful celestial beings that serve as agents of good in D&D cosmology, adapted here to provide defensive battlefield utility through the 'goad' mechanic.
The artwork for this card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose style is frequently featured across various Magic sets. His depiction captures the imposing, radiant presence of a planetar in mid-flight, emphasizing the creature's role as a protector and a force for battlefield control. Within the competitive community, the card is recognized for its unique ability to disrupt opponents' combat phases, a thematic reflection of its celestial authority and its status as a tactical asset in multiplayer Commander formats.
