Where it came from
Winds of Abandon was originally printed in the Modern Horizons set in 2019, designed as a powerful board wipe specifically for the white color identity. The card gained significant popularity in the Commander format for its ability to clear the board of creatures while providing a symmetrical, albeit manageable, catch-up mechanic for opponents. It reflects the evolution of white's removal capabilities, moving toward effects that exchange immediate board state for resource compensation.
The Secret Lair version, featuring collector number 882, was released as part of a specialized, limited-availability drop series. This iteration features a stylized, artistic illustration that diverges from the original Modern Horizons aesthetic, aligning with the Secret Lair program's mission to offer thematic, premium, or experimental visual interpretations of iconic Magic: The Gathering cards. These releases are generally received as collector-focused editions, emphasizing artistic collaboration over standard set distribution.
