Windswept Heath was originally released in the 2002 expansion Onslaught as part of a cycle of fetch lands, designed to enhance mana consistency by allowing players to search their decks for specific basic land types. The Judge Gift version, released in 2009, was created as a special promotional reward for Magic: The Gathering judges to recognize their contribution to the game’s organized play community. These cards were distributed exclusively through regional judge conferences and mailings, making them highly sought after by players and collectors who value both gameplay utility and prestige.

The 2009 edition features new, exclusive artwork by Anthony S. Waters, who had previously illustrated numerous cards for the game. Moving away from the original Onslaught aesthetic, Waters utilized a more painterly, atmospheric style to capture the desolate, windswept nature of the landscape. His design was well received for its cohesive color palette and its ability to convey the card's function as a gateway to untamed wildlands, solidifying this specific printing as a staple inclusion in high-end legacy and modern decks.
