Where it came from
Wingshield Agent was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws inspiration from the Art Deco era and the jazz-fueled aesthetic of 1920s American prohibition, centering on the city of New Capenna, a metropolis built by angels and run by five distinct criminal families. This particular card represents the influence of the Brokers, a faction known for their legal expertise and role as contract enforcers within the city's hierarchy.
The card features artwork by artist Jason A. Engle, who utilized a clean, structured style to convey the card's theme of bureaucratic protection and aerial vigilance. The design intent was to capture the mechanical 'shield' mechanic prevalent in the set, visually translating the concept of a magical barrier into a high-fantasy, urban noir aesthetic. Upon its introduction, the card was received as a functional utility piece in limited play formats, valued for its ability to provide tactical durability to other creatures on the battlefield.
