Provenance

Where it came from

Wing Shards was originally released in the 2004 set Champions of Kamigawa. The card was designed as part of a cycle of spells that utilized the Arcane keyword, a mechanic central to the set's Japanese folklore-inspired theme. Mechanically, the card was intended to provide white decks with a flexible removal option that could be enhanced through the Splice onto Arcane mechanic, allowing players to reuse the effect by attaching it to other spells in their hand.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Klayton R. K. Ziemba, who rendered the shards with a sharp, ethereal aesthetic to match the spirit-focused lore of the Kamigawa plane. When it was included in The List for the Masters 25 set, it served as a nod to the game's expansive history, allowing players to encounter older, mechanically distinct cards that highlight the evolving design philosophies of the game over the decades.
