Where it came from
Winota, Joiner of Forces was released in 2020 as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on themes of mutation, monstrous companions, and the wild, untamed nature of the plane of Ikoria. Winota represents a key figure in the set's narrative, depicted as a human commander who leads her forces into battle against the plane's oversized apex predators.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed character portraits. Her design emphasizes Winota’s status as a tactical leader, utilizing a vibrant color palette that captures the high-fantasy aesthetic of the set. Upon release, the card became a significant subject of competitive discussion, recognized for its powerful triggered ability that allowed players to bring non-human creatures directly onto the battlefield, which quickly solidified its presence in various tournament formats.
