Where it came from
Winota, Joiner of Forces was released in 2020 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. Designed as a legendary creature representing a human leader within the monster-dominated plane of Ikoria, the card features artwork by illustrator Anna Steinbauer. Steinbauer was tasked with depicting a character who embodies the unique, symbiotic bond between humans and the plane's massive beasts, resulting in a design that emphasizes tactical leadership amidst chaos.
Upon its introduction to the game, the card quickly became a focal point in competitive formats, particularly due to its powerful ability to put creatures directly onto the battlefield. This efficiency led to its status as a staple in various deck archetypes, though it also earned a reputation for its high power level, eventually necessitating adjustments in certain sanctioned play environments. Its design remains a notable example of the high-impact creature cards characteristic of the Ikoria era.
