Where it came from
Witherbloom Command is a multi-color sorcery card released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It represents the essence of the Witherbloom College, one of the five magical houses at the Strixhaven university, which is themed around life, death, and the biological sciences. The card was designed to offer versatility in gameplay by allowing players to choose two of four distinct effects, reflecting the complex, dual-natured magic practiced by the students of the house.
The illustrative work for this specific promo version features a distinct aesthetic that aligns with the overarching gothic-botanical visual language of the set. Artists for the Strixhaven line aimed to blend traditional dark-fantasy tropes with a collegiate, academic atmosphere. Upon release, the cycle of 'Commands'—including this one—was widely praised by players for its efficiency and strategic utility, becoming a staple in various deck formats that utilize the black and green color combination.
