Where it came from
Withering Hex was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a black-aligned enchantment, it reflects the set’s heavy focus on tribal mechanics and the recurring theme of cyclical destruction that permeated the block’s narrative, which centered on the impending return of the Phyrexians to the plane of Otaria.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by rk post, a prolific artist in the trading card game community known for his distinctively dark and atmospheric style. His design for Withering Hex utilizes sharp, unsettling imagery to capture the card's function of removing counters from creatures, mirroring the decay and attrition thematic to black magic within the game's color pie.
