Where it came from
Witty Demon is part of the 'Mystery Booster: Convention Edition' playtest cards, a unique set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. These cards were designed to capture the experimental, sometimes chaotic spirit of internal Magic: The Gathering playtesting, featuring 'playtest stickers' and unconventional mechanics that were never intended for official tournament play.
The design of the card leans into a meta-humorous aesthetic, utilizing a placeholder art style that mimics the rough sketches and mock-ups used by developers during the initial ideation phase. It was created to provide a glimpse behind the curtain of the game's development process, allowing players to experience the quirky, unpolished ideas that typically remain within the R&D department.
